The return of the brother
Not many years ago, in our
countryside, there was a widow who lived with two sons and her
sister. Suffering from acute depression, one day she took her own
life, throwing the entire family into dismay.
Not long after, when one of her sons felt that the burden of life
wastoo heavy to bear, in a vulgar manner, also took his own life.
Thetown was appalled, but none
moreso than the brother of the suicide
and his aunt.
The two remained in their home and continued to work the fields as
always. One night, however, while they were sleeping in their rooms
upstairs, they heard footsteps. It seemed to them that someone
cautiously ascended the wooden stairs and stopped before the closed
doors of their rooms.
The
aunt, terrified, asked if there was someoneon the other side, but no
answer came from the corridor.
The next night and the one following, the incident was repeated and
the nephew, growing frightened, was forced to move his cot into his
aunt's room. One night, however, the thud of footsteps became so
violent that they sounded like hammer blows in the isolated house.
The aunt, seeing her nephew crying and trembling in fear at not
knowing who was on the other side of the door, courageously cried
out "What do you want, my child.. nothing was done to you! You have
done as you wished!"
The noise suddenly ceased and
there were several seconds of complete silence and then only the
sound of footsteps slowly going back down the stairs.
The next day the boy went into the stable to do routine work and
with great astonishment, he discovered that it had already been
cleaned and the animals tended.
For months, every night, aunt and
nephew heard cautious steps going up and down the steps again,
lingering for a few seconds before the doors of the bedroom, and
every morning found themselves with a clean the barn and the
animals in perfect order. After this, he must have found peace ...
as he never returned.
